The annual prize honours Canadian artists under the age of 40 who have exhibited in a public or commercial gallery in the past 18 months. The winner receives $50,000, while the other four finalists receive $5,000 each.

Although the proposed changes to Canada’s Copyright Act have their benefits, they have failed to consider the visual-artist community on two key points: fair dealing and Resale Right, say advocates.

Julie McIntyre, president of CARFAC B.C., said a “resale right” policy needs to be introduced that would allow an artist or their estate to profit when a new owner buys one of their works following the initial sale.

An entertainment organization and a network have stepped in to save an audio-visual preservation program that disappeared after the federal government's cut to arts funding in 2008.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council announced the 18 organizations funded under the Sustaining Program for Professional Arts Organizations.
