As an artist-run organization, CARFAC Ontario knows the needs of artists and has developed services and programs to assist you at every stage of your career. Our staff of four are available to members for advice and consultations. Our staff can advise you on your rights and responsibilities, refer you to the appropriate resource or service, and sometimes advocate on your behalf. Our staff are experienced in reviewing contracts, and can help you understand a legal agreement prior to signing it, or aid you in interpreting a contract you have already signed.

We publish a number of books on the business and practical aspects of visual and media art. We have developed a member's rate that represents a discount on the non-member rate. We also offer discounts on bulk orders (contact us), for educational institutions and libraries.

Do you have a legal issue relating to your artistic practice?

Through the Visual Artists’ Legal Clinic of Ontario (VALCO), CARFAC Ontario and Torys LLP have partnered to provide summary advice to artists about their legal rights and responsibilities. If you have questions relating to copyright, commercial contracts, labour law, commercial leases (for studio and gallery spaces), tenants’ rights or incorporating as a business, let CARFAC Ontario and Torys LLP help by providing approximately one hour of free summary legal advice. Contact CARFAC Ontario for further details or to arrange an appointment to meet with a representative of Torys LLP. Free legal research and/or representation may be allocated on a case by case basis. CARFAC ONline, CARFAC Ontario's email bulletin of opportunities for visual and media artists, is sent to all members with a valid email address, every weekend. It includes postings that fall into the following categories: announcements, calls for submissions, arts-related employment opportunities, artist residency programs, grants and awards. All calls for submissions are for events or exhibitions which pay artists' fees according to the current CARFAC Minimum Fee Schedule, or present an opportunity for the artist to receive reasonable compensation (i.e. the possibility of the sale of artists' works).

Do you have a product or service you provide for visual or media artists? If so, consider advertising in DISPATCH, CARFAC Ontario's quarterly newsletter. DISPATCH is a business and artistic resource for our members, and our readers pay close attention to featured advertisements. It is distributed to over 1000 practicing visual artist members, organizations and institutions throughout Ontario, both in print and electronically.
